Date: Mon Apr 5 20:44:30 1999 Daniel Boone b. 1734 - d. 1820 Explorer/Statesman Early Years: Daniel Boone, the son of Quaker parents, was born near present-day Reading, Pennsylvania. Like many boys of his day, helearned to hunt and trap at a young age. Major Accomplishments: Daniel Boone is most remembered as an adventuring frontiersman. He made hi initial visit to the Kentucky wilderness in 1767 and returned there from 1769 - 1771 for hunting, trapping, and extensive exploration. Boone then led the first group of permanent settlers to Kentucky in 1775 and founded Boonesborough, a fortified settlement. He continued to blaze trails, as he extended the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap, allowing large-scale migration of settlers through the Allegheny Mountains into the Kentucky wilderness area. He was also a member of the Virginia legislature from 1781 - 1787. Trivia: Mr. Boone was kidnapped by Shawnee Indians in 1778, but escaped in time to warn the settlers and help defend the fort. Juliette Gordon Low b. 1860 - d. 1927 Girl Scouts Founder Early Years: Juliette Gordon, nicknamed "Daisy," was from a prominent Savannah, Georgia family. She was educated in private schools and traveled widely. Major Accomplishments: While living in Great Britian, Mrs. Low met Sir Robert Baden-Powell,the founder of the English Boy Scouts. Baden-Powell's sister, Agnes, persuaded Low to help her expand a similar group for girls, called Girl Guides. In 1912, Mrs. Low returned to Savannah, bringing the Girl Guide movement with her to the United States. Teh group became popular nationally, and in 1915, the name was changed to the Girl Scouts. Mrs. Low served as the first president of the Girl Scouts and traveled across the country promoting this active new option for girls. Trivia: Juliette was always an independent spirit. One time, her mother had to cut off all of Juliette's long hair after Juliette let a cousin braid taffy into it.
