We often tease a business colleague, raised in East Texas, about his strong
accent. One day he confided that a college English professor told him, "I'll
pass you on one condition."

"What's that?" he asked.

Our friend Alex emigrated from Russia to the United States and was looking
for a job in engineering. During one interview the personnel director
remarked how difficult it was to pronounce typically long Russian names.
"What?" Alex said. "And you think Massachusetts is easy?"

I was paying for gas at a convenience store in north Georgia when I noticed
that the clerk looked exhausted. "Rough day?" I asked.

"Nothing's been going right," she said. "And to top it off, some guy just
came in asking directions, and he didn't speak a word of English."

"What nationality was he?" I asked.

"Oh," she replied, "I think he was British."
